Hi Tomas,
Beskrivelse: Tre flocks of Sabini's passed Punta de la Sarga this morning! An odd sighting during spring migration, maybe influenced by strong winds from the north.
It was three flocksn, not tre flocks... Anyway more pictures from our trip to Western Sahara and Morocco at www.flickr.com/photos/tomas_s/sets/72157623990298014/
Why are the birds on all the photos flying south?
If you´re facing the Atlantic Sea from Morocco, you must be looking West.
Are they returning, due to the strong wind from North, or have you "mirrored" the photos?
Kind regards - Jens
You've got a sharp eye, Jens! I was waiting to see if noticed this odd fact! We were standing on the point of the Dahkla peninsula (Punta de la Sarga). The penisula stretches in sothwestern direction, and the gulls actually entered the Dahkla Bay (the bay to the east side of the peninsula). So the birds are actually flying northeast and passing us "on the inside". All flocks entered the bay, and we did not see them return. Maybe the flew over the peninsula further north.
What? There is no fake or manipulation what so ever. If you had read the comments below you would have realised that! Obviously, my photo is no joke. Neither is it an intended test - I simply did not take the time to explain it in detail when I uploaded the photo. And by the way, birds can "pass" Punta de la Sarga in all directions.
As a return critique, I would like to point out that it is rather rude to write text full of capitalized words implying fake or manipulation - especially when the comments are completely misdirected.
Regards / Tomas
Where is the moderator when you need one?
If Carstens comment is not a joke, it's IMHO one comment that should suspend a user from netfugl.
In fact one could easily belive that Carstens comment "Netfugl is NOT a Private forum UN-intended artifacts is another matter" tell us that he's the moderator.
Wich i hope is not the case!
One thing I noticed when I re-read this whole discussion, is that Carsten is asking for the ORIGINAL photos.
But Carsten, the photos you´ve seen ARE the original photos. It is not a manipulation. It is not a fake set-up to make people fall in a trap.
The excuse for your rude comment could be that you thought it was a trap made on purpose.
But maybe you could comment on this statement?
At least I think it would be a good idea to give Tomas an apology - to close this crazy discussion.

Jeg would like to spørge, hvorfor skal denne tråd foregå in english, what is meningen, jeg think it er pissing irriterende at skulle læse more or less hopeless engelsk.
Vh Tommy Jensen
Kindly accept My Apology, TOMAS.
SOLELY MY misunderstanding and mistake!!
Many thanks to Jens G.W. and Moderator
for prompt interception.
Kind rgds. .......... C.
I had the fortune to visit the area two weeks after Tomas and the rest of the Swedish Group visited the area. I did not see any Sabine Gulls (I had my focus pointed towards all the Wilson Storm Petrels – sorry Tomas, I had to :-) ).
There is nothing wrong with the photo. Punta de la Sarga is like Grenen in Denmark. The birds can migrate towards north either west of Grenen or east of Grenen.
A photo of a bird migrating north on the east side of Grenen could easily be misunderstood as a bird migrating south on the west side if you don’t know in which direction the camera was pointed.
Morten
Apologies accepted, of course!
Regarding the Punta de la Sarga and its potential as a spot for seabird watching, it is difficult to know from only spending a couple of days there. Maybe we were extremely fortunate, but it was one of the most rewarding places during our trip. Massive amounts of terns and waders resting, Europen Stormpetrels flying back and forth along the peninsula and gulls and terns flying by (including Royal and Lesser Crested). We also had some skuas and Cory's shearwaters etc. It is definitely a place worth visiting!
Morten, what was your experience? So you had Wilson's Stormpetrels! It really appears as a nice spot. Would be nice to read what you saw on your trip (I will soon prepare a trip report for our trip).
Best regards / Tomas
(In short: Just stating that it is good behavior to write comment's in the same language as the original author/photographer did).
Mvh Rune
No doubt this spot has great potential. I am confident anyone could find some nice WP records if they decided to spend time seawatching there. Due to a tight program we didn’t spend much time seawatching but the area rewarded us with Cory’s Shearwater, 100s of European Stormpetrels and 10+ Wilson Storm Petrels, Sabine Gulls, Great Skuas, Royal Terns, Lesser Crested Terns and probably something I forgot. JSH is currently finishing our trip report, so birders interesting in birds in Western Sahara should await this one. Wilson Storm petrel was probably the unexpected highlight of our trip.
Some of JSH brilliant photos from our trip can be seen here: Morocco

Peace, love and understanding

Beskrivelse: The peninsula of Punta de la Sarga appears to be a very good spot for close encounters of European Storm Petrels. We simultaneously saw more than 10 individuals (difficult to estimate the total number).

Most Danish A. nyrocas have been seen along with Common Pochards.
If the Karlshamn-bird is associating with Mallards as well as eating bread it seems likely that it may involve an escaped bird. The fact that the bird is wintering is also slightly odd.
There are several accepted sightings of wintering nyrocas in Denmark. Although some records are more "dodgy" than others, I don't think any of them have avoided the escape-theory. Never the less several of these more or less "dodgy" Danish winter sightings have made into category A.
This issue has of course been discussed (see e.g. http://www.artportalen.se/birds/gallery_imageinfo.asp?imageID=185226). Some argue that it is not so odd that normally shy birds change their behaviour and adopt to other species under certain circumstances. Since it is not impossible that it is a wild bird, we will end up guessing... Personally, my guess is not very educated - although I can't keep from wondering why it did not quickly try to leave the ice behind (did it really start enjoying bread that fast?).
Anyone have somethings else but speculations to offer? Are captive ducks seldom ringed? How common are white-eyes in birds parks? Does anyone know about confirmed escapes?
Ferruginous Duck is not that rare in captivity. I have no concrete info regarding numbers held in captivity, but I have seen birds in several different Danish collections. The majority are probably ringed (at least the majority of those I've seen). There have been several records of confirmed escapes. This one was ringed and thus proven to be an escape:
