Beskrivelse: Look at 'size' here - The Caspian Tern and Swift Tern (Crested Tern) might almost overlap in measured size (bill tip to tail tip) but body size is quite another thing. The Swift Tern seems tiny. Also at the beach here: Silver Gull (L. novaehollandiae), Pacific Golden Plover (P. fulva), Ruddy Turnstone (A. interpres) and Australian Pelican (P. conspicillatus).
Roebuck Bay is a shore bird hotspot! Broome Bird Observatory is a good place to stay and use as a base.
Beskrivelse: Timbered area near the coast. I presume it's an sub-adult bird (2cy?). A beginning rufous collar. Pale streaks on the face. This bird is also paler and smaller than the southern ssp. fasciatus.
End of september and very dry, - the bird is looking for a drop of drinking water inside the premises of Broome Bird Observatory. Picture taken from the Observatorys 'shadehouse'. A visit at the observatory is higly recommended if in WA.
Beskrivelse: Seen in dry bushland near the beach in Roebuck Bay.
The Great Bowerbird is mostly plain-coloured but from behind you might see the lilac nuchal crest... here not in full display. The bower has nothing to do with the nest - and as seen here this bower is build rather far from human left-overs - since the entrance is mostly white stones and shells - and a few glass and plastic pieces.
Beskrivelse: adult, ringed bird... near Broome Bird Observatory. The observatory is absolutely worth a visit and a stay (auto-camping and rooms)and friendly fellow-birders in the shade-hut. In the toilet building they run a check-list of 8 species of which 3 is potential lethal (Western Brown Snake, Death Adder and Red-backed Spider)... my first check-list where some of the possibilities are NOT attractive to you. Aussie humor !! ... no risk, no fun !
Acces: I recommend 4WD most of the year.
