Beskrivelse: Some males have almost dark crown and some have almost white crown.
The variation is probably individual or due to wear - but juvenile birds do have dark crown, so it is possible that birds, like this one, with very dark crown are immature males?
Or is it just an adult in fresh plumage...?
Black-billed Wood-hoopoe sometimes show red base of bill and sometimes, like this bird, mostly red bill.
Especially ssp abyssinicus is known for this, but this picture is taken well within the range of ssp neglectus. However the distribution of these races in Ethiopia is uncertain, so I don't know for sure if this bird is ssp abyssinicus or neglectus.
Titel: Adult han i vinterdragt - adult male in non-breeding plumage
Beskrivelse: Most probably ssp variegatus (which will change name to ssp hemprichii in future? And ssp armenicus will then be ssp variegatus. Very confusing).
This bird appeared to have less white in tail than would be expected for Variegatus - but still more than should be possible for ssp armenicus (half tail appeared white - but this is difficult to judge in field. Very poor photos shows at least half white tail in flight. The bird appeared overall a little paler in the field than on this picture
Beskrivelse: Alle racer af Black Saw-wing i Etiopien ser oftest blot sorte ud i felten.
IN ENGLISH:
This bird has a clearly blue gloss on the right photo. This makes me convinced it is the nominate race Pristoptera aka "Blue Saw-wing"
Usually the birds just appear black in the field and the gloss of each race is very hard to judge in the field (like on the left picture)
Note it is with certainty the same bird on both pictures, because of an unusual white feather on the left wing.
