Beskrivelse: Dry woodland bordering the temple site. Here also Blue-crowned Motmot - compared to T.M. a bit more secretive and much lower or on the ground. T.M. is often sitting open at mid-level - down til 2m.
Beskrivelse: Green Jay's are often seen in a short moment.. inside the scrub.. and often their voice tells You that they are there.. the two individuals here were seen with Yucatan Jay's in a 'raid' against left-over food from the tourists at the temple-site (in the more wooded areas)

Beskrivelse: Seen at a hacienda with tall trees. Rather common all over the peninsula, calls out loud and frequently. This ssp. does not fit the name 'golden-fronted' very well (or not at all).. also the Dansih name (Bleg Spætte = 'Pale Woodpecker') seems to fit badly. A species of great variation in color patern. By the way: it was much more common that it's endemic smaller relative Yucatan Woodpecker... on our trip say 200:1. In our case also different habitats - Yucatan Woodpecker was seen only once in rather open low costal scrub near to Rio Lagartos. No Golden-fronted was seen there - all though the golden-fronted was seen in costal woods and scrub-like surroundings in other parts of the peninsula.

Beskrivelse: Male bird. Note the tip of the primaries - there is a 'hook-like' structure - not visible in my guidebooks. A general oriole-feature ? Any info on my mail would be welcome.

Beskrivelse: From the 'inside' of an open hacienda.
More guides counts ssp. ridgwayi as a full species. And others don't. It's obvious that there are clear differences to the Northern RWS... just look at the white spots between eyes and bill. Besides that this species/sub-species never migrates. It is sort of endemic to Yucatan pen-insula and close-by areas. Here a collage of two individuals - one eating the remains in a man-removed beehive.
