Beskrivelse: Yucatan endem. If not very common then at least very visible when present. Seen at two different temple sites in the area - and as here directly on the road to the Calakmul temple site. Dense wood on both sides of the road. This male in display attacked any slow running wehicle - and persons on the road like Western capercaillie does in May in Scandinavia - but this bird is HUGE and has spurs. And knows how to use them. It is no 'joke' - as it sometimes seem to be with the capercaillie. Here shot with the 'pocket-camera' by my wife Merete. Safe inside the car :-). A U-tube video of 'us' running around the car with the 'angry-bird' just behind us would have been a hit...

Beskrivelse: Half way between the entrance and the templesite... some 30 km south of Conhuas (Mex 286) ... mature wood/jungle. It's a female due to the black forehead and the lack of red on the chin/throat.
Beskrivelse: Seen in tall forest and swamp.
Along the road from the 'mid-way station' to the templesite - app. 12-13 km (?) S. of the station is a small 'lake' (swamp) at the right side of the road. Very little water in late March so birds and other wild-life in need of water are 'concentrated' here - also huge crocodiles and anacondas. Be ware (or bring your wife.. Merete sort of saved me by spotting the big guy >3m in time only a few meters away from this bird) - it's so easy to get carried away with this kind of birds at hand for pictures :-). On this up-load it's easy to see why it's a ssp. albiventris (the white between the black and rufous on the belly)
