Titel: Nuttall's is almost a California endem related to oak- and cottonwoods. The close relative Ladder-backed Woodpecker is found in arid areas in Arizona and east to Texas. They can inter-breed, but they hardly overlap.

Beskrivelse: 2 ID factors relevant for both sexes are: - prominent black in the pattern of the cheek in Nuttall's - while this is opposite in Ladder-backed. Also the upper back of Nuttall's is plain black - while Ladder-backed have white bars al the way up to the neck.
