An extremely Fine and Beautiful photo
of Broad-billed's physiognomy from
above.

A note:
OBVIOUSLY, this bird does NOT have the
typical (Gallinago-like) whitish mid-stripe
on top of its head -
which I believed (sorry)... was mandatory,
- cf. ad./juv. illustr. in BEAMAN et al.
So, is this no-stripe feature common,
probably associated w/ juv. birds?
Thx to PER ............ C.
Carsten,
I don't own 'Beaman et al.'.... always found the book as distasteful as the name of the main-author is to this sensitive Dane.
So no wonder said book got the location of the double eye-stripe of Broad-billed sandpiper wrong.
According to Jonsson neither juvenile nor adults have a 'mid-stripe'.....The fine book "Shorebirds An Identification Guide" by Peter Hayman et al.,however, actually depicts this trait on one tiny illustration, but not on any of the larger ones of juveniles and adults, nor is it mentioned in the main text.
Perhaps some shore-bird expert will chime in and set things straight........
Dear PETER
Thanks for Your clear-cut stance und grausame
Salbe towards Beaman et al.
Your comment provides a FINE contribution twds
clarifying stripes on the head of Broad-billed
- and twds reaching des Pudels Kern.

Going to SVENSSON's EU field guide it appears
that JUV. Broad-billed has
either TWO BROAD stripes over each eye
or One BROAD lower stripe
and one THIN upper stripe
- i.e. NO CENTRAL stripe on top of
the head.
LARSSON's EU guide illustrate both JUVs
and Adults with
One BROAD lower and one THIN upper stripe
- i.e. NO CENTRAL stripe.
In BEAMAN et al. both JUV and AD have a BROAD
+ a THIN eye stripe
- i.e. NO central stripe
as unfortunately interpreted by me - Sorry!

[In PER's fine photo the EYES are NOT located
Between the white stripes, as I assumed
- so Sorry! ].

So, I agree with You, PETER, that Broad-billed
has NO central head stripe!
PER's excellent photo confirms SVENSSON's
illustr. that JUV May have a BROADER
or a Narrow/Slim upper eye stripe,
more or less as a bifurcation.
