Hæ, eclipse male it is. If same as this summer then adult I would think.

Sæll Yann!

It probably is the same bird as in july, now moulting so that head marking has disappeared.

How do you tell the difference between barrow's and common goldeneye in these plumages.

Kveðja, Silas

Sæll !

With no direct comparison you can use the head shape. This bird has a typical Barrow's head, very black with a "high" top of head and steep front. Very diagnostic and there is no doubt to me that your bird is one of "ours" ;)

Please explain what does the word "sæll" mean, thanks.

Regards,

Lars

Hi in Icelandic...

Dear Yann

I am pleased to see, that you use Netfugl. This summer I visited Iceland for birding and it was very good - both for birding, for nature and for the friendly people in Iceland - nearly all understand danish, although many do not speak it.
I will strongly recomand other danish birders to visit Iceland.

Best wishes
Søren

I'm told that head shape isn't quite enough to confirm a barrow's goldeneye. We didn't see the upper wing. Are there other details in the plumage which suggest barrow's?

I've only seen about 5 barrow's and never an eclipse male like this, so it would be nice to have some "conlusive" details which exclude common goldeneye.

Is the head shape and colour the primary things you use to id barrow's in eclipse?

Yann, you should watch out for a mediterrian gull. We found one 2 days ago but it hasn't been relocated! First for the Faroes...

And the yellow-browed are on their way :-)

Silas

You have more photos of this bird? Please send to yann at internet.is. Will look and see if I can find more convincing features for you :)

Med Gull is just in my wildest dreams, not recorded yet in Iceland... Congratulations with your find! Watch out for possible american birds early next week....

bestu kveðjur
Yann

Dear Søren,

Thank you for your kind words, glad you liked Iceland! I hope you managed to see some good birds :)

Last year in september, I visited Myvatn, Iceland in september, and I was surprised that (close to) none of the more than 500 male Barrow's (eclipse) showed any obvious markings in the head.

Regards Torben

I've added four more pics here. Hope they can help!
